If you have not made a payment since 1990, their statue of limitations is well past to try to sue you. In addition the item should be off your credit report 7 years plus 180 days is the maximum is can be on your report.
There is no reason to pay such old debt as you've already paid for it with the item on your credit report for those 7 plus years.
That's how I understand the rules
