It is my understanding that the FTC regulates that an employer must disclose to you before you apply that they will do a credit report investigation. Somebody cannot request your report without your knowledge as I understand it - though many do and they just don't want us to know that. Go to the www.ftc.gov website (you'll have to search the site for consumer credit, debt collection, etc). The regulations are there. Also, this employer must provide to you the reason for denial of employment. Make sure you cite in your letter that you are requesting that information under federal law. Also, you are entitled to a free credit report from ALL the credit reporting bureaus because you were denied employment. I suspect, because the job was with a banking institution, they are assuming it would be risky for them for you to be in a position of handling money. You also have a right to challenge information contained in your credit report. The circumstances of your becoming delinquent certainly should play a role in employment (i.e. job loss, divorce, medical, etc.) but most don't give a damn. Good luck in these endeavors. Have been in similar situation. Re: CRA - wait until you receive the reports and do a little research before wisking off a letter. Lots of reporting is inaccurate and misleading so it's a good idea to really scrutinize it. Just make sure you keep every document you have relating to this - set up a file. Post your questions here when you receive them. Linda & several others are well-versed in these issues.
