Pre-bankruptcy check list

I wonder if anyone knows of certain things a person considering bankrupcty must or should do prior to filing. I've heard you should open up a new checking account; I suppose because it's hard to do so after filing. Is this true? Are there any other things that should be done? What about something called bankruptcy planning? I believe this refers to choosing which assets to include as exempt property and selling exempt property to pay off non-exempt property. Does anyone know what the best way to proceed would be? Thanks.
