charge off or Consumer credit counseling?

I have received advice on charge offs and settlements, and I thank you. I am afraid of the ramifications of both avenues. Our credit is already bad, but I don't want it to be bad for another 6-7 years. I understand how to deal with the CC companies and collection agencies, so I am not afraid of them or their tactics...just worried about our credit rating in the next few years. Might it be wise to join a debt management program like CCCS? How does this look on one's credit report? Any better than charge-offs or settlements?
