Same item, two entries, different dates?

I have a collection item listed on my Experian report by Perimeter Credit. It states the account was opened 5/98, last delinquent 10/00. It also says the account was transferred.

On my TransUnion report, there is a collection listed by Financial Credit Corp. for the same account. It says the date it was opened was 10/00 (I thought the open date should be the date the account was opened with the original creditor? That would be 5/98) There is also no date listed for "Last Delinquent".

My questions are:

1. Can the same item be reported by two different collection agencies?

2. Can a new collection agency change the "Open Date" because they took over the account?

3. If there is no delinquent date listed, how is the time limit for this item established?

Any help is much appreciated. I am currently disputing both items on different grounds (the original creditor is a scam artist) but wanted to have this information just in case.

Thanks again.
