You may have filed for homestead in your own name, but unless and until you have a recorded ownership interest in your name, it is an invalid filing. The tax assessors office will be cross matching the filing with the recorded tax assessment, you can't have it both ways, either you own a legally homesteaded (and exempt from bankruptcy) property- or you don't. See a real estate attorney -your existing lawyer is blowing smoke !!
