How much money are you talking about? It may not have that big an impact if they do report it. It's taxed as ordinary income, not in some special category like Capital Gains. A lot of times they don't. If they send it to the IRS, they have to send you one, never fear.

I would concentrate on getting deletion from credit report in exchange for payment. Have you checked your reports?
