Gulf State

I had my car repossesed in 94. In 2000 the car company sold the debt to Gulf State. The debt is over 7 years old but now it looks like a totally new debt on the credit report. The car company is no longer on the credit report for a car repo but now Gulf State has taken their place. Is this legal? What is the best way to go about handling Gulf State. I want to pay the amount in full but want to make sure they upday my credit. Is it possible to make a deal with them to take it off my credit report totally if I pay in full? Thanks!
