You need to request a deferment or forebearance with your lender based upon economic hardship. I believe there are different rules depending what type of student loan (i.e. Federal Stafford, Perkins, Plus). You may also qualify for graduated payments or consolidation. Do you have proof of payment? If payments are made by check you can check to see when they were cleared for payment. Sometimes the lender reports a payment as a different date than received that you can contest. I'd try the deferment & forebearance first to give yourself a break. I think that's done on a year by year review basis. You will have to supply proof of wages (copies of pay stubs) to support your claim of hardship. Expenses they take into consideration (I believe) are necessary basic living expenses, housing, utilities, etc.
