Credit Card debt

Today a credit card company called my work.They left a message with the receptionist to call Providian Financial. Should they have given their name? I'm sure she knew this was about a debt. Also can I send a letter to them telling them to cease and desist calling my work, or do I have to wait until it's in the hands of a collection agency. This is very embarressing.
