Not sure about that. How old is account? Still with original creditor? If this is just recent you might be able to negotiate with someone "higher up" not someone low on the totem pole. Anything you do should be in writing - not verbally. Also settlement negotiations could depend on "what type of hardship" (not just paying the bills doesn't qualify). An attorney may be able to assist you in structuring a settlement that is of benefit to you and creditor.
