Well, first off, in NY State derogatory items must be removed from your report after 5 years, so you can dispute those items older than 5 years as "out of date." Use the form the credit bureau sends with your report.

It sounds like your file has been merged with someone else's file. You can call the credit bureaus at their 800 numbers (there is always a long wait so be prepared). They usually do not admit this at first, you have to be persistent, don't give up.

Or you can take the easiest way and dispute these accounts you don't recognize as "not mine."

Be sure you check all three major credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans Union. They all have websites and you can dispute items online, just be sure you print out or save copies of your dispsutes.

Let us know if you have any problems with the credit bureaus. They can be difficult to deal with.
