taxable charge offs

In massachusetts: some of my debts have been charged off, and I am filing for bankruptcy. Will I have to pay the taxes on them? (I'm talking about for year 2003) I was told that because I'm filing bankruptcy that I won't have to pay taxes on those charge offs. Any info appreciated.. Thanks.
