charge off /collection

I have a question. Due to personal problems several years ago, I now have several charge offs and collections on my credit report. I am now in a better situation and am able to pay these debts off. the highest was for 1500 and the total is about $4000. most were origionally deliquient in 1999 and a few in 2000. No one has taken me to court or threatened seriously to and I am not being harrassed other than having the most horrible credit on the planet and all the problems that go along with that. The debts were origionly incurred in CA although I now live in NC. I was wandering if it will help my credit to pay off my debts. I have already got a secured credit card and am making good payments on that as well as a student loan that I have made perfect payments on. Should I pay off the debts or is the damage already done and should I let it go. I don't want to continue to have problems renting, finding a job etc. for the next five years if I can do anything about it...thanks
