A collection agency has placed negative information in our credit report about a utility (PG&E) account. They are reporting it as open and 120+ past due. What does that mean? We don't get utilites from PG&E since 1996.

We owe them $311. This debt is from early 1996. We didn't pay due to financial difficulties. We finally have our credit in order and now this. We can pay now, but we don't want this negative information on our credit reports. How do I fix this problem? Should I send them a letter asking them to delete it if we pay? Thanks.
