Bank Loan for 1750.00 from School

I am no longer in the military and was discharged 10 years ago. They were going to payoff a loan I had with an Alabama bank. I got a letter stating it was paid and it even showed paid on the credit report until this year. Now the bank is calling and sending threatening letters. What is the best thing to do. How do I confirm with the military that this was paid. This happened in 1989.
