How to appeal a judgement

Hello. A judgement was filed against me in 1996 and I want to try to appeal it, because I provided proof to show that I did not owe but the plaintiff's attorney convinced the judge to file a default judgement because I did not provide this information within the specified time, although I did. It's complicated but anyway I feel that because I was representing myself and ignorant at the time about the court process that this judgement was filed against me, and I'd like to know if anyone has tried to appeal a judgement and how I should go about this.
