FCRA 7 year limit

Hi, I'm writing because I keep getting conflicting information about the 7 year limit on bad credit info. in credit reports. Can bad debts (paid or not) get reposted to your credit report after 7 years? Is that legal? It was my assumption that once the 7 years past date of last activity happened - the negative information had to be removed and could not be reposted. So does anyone have a definitive answer?
