Gulfstate, Credit to a Minor

Gulfstate has apparently bought a debt that I didn't pay to Sprint for $176. I never paid the Sprint bill because I was 16 when I entered into the contract and didn't think that they had any legal recourse. That was in 12/96. The debt was reported in 03/01. Some questions...why did it take so long to be reported, and what steps should I take to get this off my report? I'm going to be refused from a job if I don't get this taken care of soon!
