Go back and read this again. If you kept your address up to date with the post office, put in appropriate changes on you driver's license, and were not trying to hiding, then the SOL stands. DL and P.O. address changes are the key, I believe. If you made those changes, they couldn't say you were hiding from them.

Also, your situation is different in other ways. For one thing, your "collectors" are hiding ;) No one can find out who they are. Legitimate collection agencies have physical addresses, are incorporated, and licensed in the state where they are trying to collect. Not so in your case.
