I MUST get a checking or savings account....

I tried to get a checking account about 14 months ago, and was denied by Hardwick Bank, now BB&T. SHould I try small, local banks? Do I have a better chance trying to get a savings than checking? Thanks for any and all help...this is depressing. :(
