If you look under the credit laws section to the left you will find SOL's of each state. Rhode Island is one of the worst (up to 10 years to take action) - other states are in the 3-5 year range for them to take action. What collection agency? Was the debt incurred before you got married? Do not make any agreements with c.a. because that can restart the SOL. If the debt is paid - even at a fraction of the original amount - it will end up on credit report. You can send them a Cease & Desist - don't provide them any other information and no signature - sent by certified mail, return receipt. That may hold them at bay for awhile. I'm sure there will be other responses that may have better info for you.
