1yr Old Charge Off, Ready to Pay, need HELP

My hubby and I are ready to buy a house. He has 1 charge off from the beginning of 2001. I want to pay this off, but want to know how to get Providian to agree to change their report as anything but a charge off (already shows as charge off on CA report). Why should I do BEFORE I pay this?
