No, it's not Federal Law, it's their contract with Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union. If the credit bureaus cut off their access to the database, they are out of business. That's the real reason. I wonder why these people lie when they don't need to?

Sometimes you can get a collection agency to delete in exchange for payment, but not an original creditor. Don't even bother trying. They can't issue more cards if they can't get access to a credit bureau.
