Verizon Collection Question

There is a collection on my credit report for $1200 from Verizon. I have called them many times to try and get them to validate this collection. The only evidence they can support are telephone bills with numbers that I have never seen. Upon researching dates, I found that I had called to have my phone disconnected in 8/01. The phone was not disconnected until 12/01. (I moved about 300 miles from my old place) I had no outstanding bill when I moved and received no bills forwarded to my new address. Is there anything I can do about this? I have spoken with a Verizon billing rep. who actually admitted that the phone was not disconnected until 12/01 and also told me that she did see a note for my requested disconnected in 8/01. Any information on this would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
