OK, for starters, when you pay a collection account (or any account, for that matter), it doesn't go off your credit report, it stays on there for 7 yrs from the date of last activity.

As far as the credit bureau saying they verified the account as "yours" when you are only AU, this happens all the time. If the creditor says they cannot find anything showing you as responsible for the debt (your signature) then THEY are reporting this account incorrectly. Often they do this intentionally on defaulted accounts to blackmail the AU into paying it, when the AU is not responsible for payment.

Send the creditor (card company) a photocopy of their own letter to you, along with a copy of your credit report showing you as responsible for the account (black out everything else except identifying info, if you want), and tell them to please DELETE this from your credit report (I am assuming it is a negative account) or you will have to take further action. Hopefully this will work, if not, let me know.

Linda
