It's a old old story. Is this agreement part of a divorce decree by any chance? These agreements don't amount to a hill of beans. They are a way to take advantage of women who take on the responsibility of raising the children alone after a divorce.

Now about this collection agency. What this guy did was illegal. He doesn't care. He just wants money. If you told him it kept you from getting a loan, he is happy because now he has leverage to convice you that you have to pay him.

DO NOT CALL THEM ANY MORE. Don't talk to them on the phone. Send a validation letter - it asks for proof that the debt is yours. Never mind what you know, use the law to help yourself. Pretend the debt is NOT yours, and set about making them prove that is is. Send the letter certified, return receipt, and give them 30 days. When the 30 days are up, send a cease letter, which tell them "you never proved this debt is mine, go away, leave me alone, and get this off my credit report.

After you begin sending the letters to the CA, send your dispute to Experian. Say something "I don't know what this is! Why is this on my credit report? I paid all my bills, this can't be mine."

You did pay your bills, this is your husband's bill. ;)

Word you letter to experian like a simple-minded consumer who is bewildered by this whole thing. Hopefully with all this, Experian willinvestigate, the collection agency won't answer, and you will get this deleted. If not, come back and let us know.

There are many options for funding your child's education besides going into debt yourself. Contact the financial aid office at the school of your/her choice and they will give you some good inof. I'm sure some of the other folks on here can tell you about grants and student loans. I am no expert on those. Cleaning up credit reports and chasing off collection agencies is more my area of expertise. ;)
