Who is suing her? A collection agency? What state are you in? How long ago did she default on this debt?

The do not put you in jail for unpaid debts in this country - they send you to "credit hell" instead.

You tell you wife that she should go to court, or she will automatically lose. Most likely her fear and embarrassment have caused her to neglect this up until now. It is time to fight back. There are laws to help her do this. It's late in the game, but all is not lost.
