[This is a crossposting copy from me and another board so I can get more information.] I have a pretty much clean credit history. Every year, I file my taxes and get copies of my credit report to make sure everything is okay. Was I surprised to see an item from Unique Collections for about 100.00 from a library I used to live next to several years ago! I have never received a letter. Of course, I contacted them and asked them where did this come from? They said they had sent several letters, and left messages and at one point spoke to a female. (Sneaky suspicion ex-roommate) Since these letters and phone supposedly went to my old address, which all of my OTHER letters were forwarded to me, I found odd. Oh well. I asked them to please delete the item off of my credit report and I would work with them to recover the monies. No dice. Then I was pretty upset. I did send off a certified letter, return receipt requested today notifying them of my desire to have "debt validation".
My questions are these: How can they go after me for library fines I most probably did not occur? One is never asked to sign for library items - they just flash your card. I can't even find my card from that time. Has anyone had any run-ins with library fines? Will the debt validation work with this? Also, since I just became aware of this through a credit report listing on Sunday, can I use my date on the credit report request to prove I was not aware of this until now? I have never signed any certified letters for receiving mails, and I really have no idea where they were even sending these to - I was pretty upset as I hung up the phone and did not think to ask. Any advice is appreciated.
