In October of 1995, an acquaintance used my credit card to rent a vehicle (stupid, I know--it was an emergency and I was naive), which he then damaged. He offered to settle with the rental company, but they decided to ignore him and simply charge my credit card. Seeing how I had nothing to do with the rental, or the accident, I disputed the charge. The credit card company, after a brief investigation, saw no basis for the claim and removed the charge. The rental company then came after me directly. I informed them I was not going to pay and that they should seek restitution from the person who rented the vehicle--who was willing to pay. Nasty letters were traded. My friend cut a deal which I was not privvy to. The letters stopped. I thought: case closed. Until YEARS later when i was denied credit, I discovered that this charge was now on my credit report, and that this rental company was charging me interest on the original sum. (the amount had nearly doubled.) I was never informed this was taking place--happened without my knowledge. Is this even legal without a judgement? So I wrote to the collection agency now in charge and I demanded proof, as is my right. Nothing--just a nasty letter to pay up. My question is: how do I get this thing OFF my credit? I want to buy a house this year and this thing is wrecking my options.
