Hospital Bill

I had a credit report done as part of the home equity loan process. To my surprise, there's an unpaid hospital bill from July of 96 that a CA was trying to collect. I immediately called the CA and was told the best thing I could do is to pay the bill($503.00) so it would be off my credit report. I know I had insurance then but the CA claims they have no record. Now the problems is the company that I was working for at the time was brought out by another company, and all of the records were destroyed in the process. I would hate to pay for something that should have been taken care of by the insurance company (we pay them enough money as is). My question is am I stuck paying this bill so I can proceed with my home equity loan or does the statue of limitation apply here?

Thanks so much for any input!

Lucy
