Rick, I think you are being SET UP for a high interest loan. This whole thing smells fishy to me. Honestly the open accounts don't have anything to do with whether or not you can get a car loan. That is hogwash. Leave your accounts alone.

I assume this was the salesman telling you this? They get kickbacks from the loan companies for placing you with a high interest subprime loan, and most car finance companies don't pay attention to medical debt anyway.

My best suggestion is find another dealer, or go to your bank or credit union and tell them you want to buy a car. Explain about the medical collection. If you have other open credit lines that you have paid on time, they are helping you, not hurting you, leave them alone unless there is some reason you want to close them.

Your bank or credit union may want you to pay the medical collection - in that case, do it if you are in a hurry for a car. If you are not in a hurry, I would ask this CA for an account statement, and an explanation of why you owe them more money. Maybe they think they have found a bottomless pit of money, and after you pay this time, they will put something else on your report, and say you still owe them money, so they can get some more.

Linda
