American Express Question

When I was 18, 1988 sure is a long time ago, I was given an American Express. Of course, I didn't pay for it and eventually it went to collections. It has long been off my credit report. 1995, maybe? Well, I am a government employee and an American Express was applied for at my work, which was subsequently denied due to an account sent to collections with them. I really don't care for the card, but my question is ... does American Express hold a grudge, or what? I'm 32 now and aptly able to pay my bills. Should I just write them off?
