Can i improve my credit score

I've got some credit that I've fallen behind on. Anyway, how do I raise my credit score? I have 5 accounts that I opend a couple of years ago then cancelled. They still remain on my report as closed by me. Would my score increase if I asked to have them removed? Also, can you dispute inquires? Would these lower your credit score? How do you elevate your score? Gloria A.
