There is a debt from a collection agency that I have contested. It is for 777.00, 500.00 + 277.00 interest. I have become tired of sending letters to the agency and being refused credit partially because of this debt. It became delinquent in 6/97.

I sent them a letter asking for an offer of settlement in exchange for them

1) Considering the debt paid in full.
2) Removing any delinquent information concerning the debt from my credit report.

The Collection Agency sent me a response with the statement: "Your account has been authorized for full settlement in the amount of $500.00." etc

No mention of removal of the delinquent information was made in the letter.

A couple of weeks later I sent a letter declining the offer and stating that although the amount was acceptable, they would have to agree to remove the delinquent information. (Basically I don't want anything bearing the "ABC Collections" company name on my credit report.)

Am I going about this the right way? I became tired of the back and forth correspondence between the collection agency and myself. I just want to get this off of my report completely.

Isn't having a "Paid in full" statement from a collection agency on my credit report just about as bad as not paying it at all?

Thank you.
