Hi. I have an old credit card debt that was opened in late 1994 or 1995 (my records are at home right now) and I know it is on my credit report as a charge off i believe. I thought I had paid a settlement back a few years and I am still trying to locate my files but have not found it yet. I recently got a letter from a law firm saying they work for the new buyer of my old debt and asking for payment. The total they are asking for is way above what I had before and I have not receieved any contact about this debt for a number of years. I had thoguht I had taken care of it when I paid off a bunch of others a few years ago but I'll admit I may have overlooked it since I had stopped hearing from them. Any advice on what I should do? I called the law office handling it and was recommended to dispute it if i thought I had paid it which is what my first step is but if I can't prove that I did, is there anything else i cna or should do? should I try to settle the amount for what was on my credit report or the total they are reporting to me now? thanks in advance.
