That would be regulated by either the contract or the laws in your state. However, if you force them to prove that the debt is yours, and they can't, it doesn't matter. If by some slim chance they did prove it was yours then you can demand a statement of the account, as a "second step" of your validation process. This was recetly upheld in an Indiana court of appeals, because the collection agency failed to provide a statement showing how they arrived at the amount they sued for. The judges said the CA had failed to validate the debt.
