One thing you need to do is find out who this "lawyer" is. Most of the time they are not lawyers - they are collection agencies, or collection lawyers (same thing). Again, I doubt this is the credit card company - they had to get rid of the bad debt a long time ago.

Re "tolling" the SOL - I will let someone with more legal expertise answer that one.
