I tried that a few years ago. I had three cards with about $5000 total debt. I was told they would get the credit card companies to stop charging late fees and interest. Didn't happen. I paid for about a year before I noticed that I owed more than when I started. I ended up throwing away about $2000 because of their promises, and my failure to notice sooner that I was still being penalized.
