You should demand to speak with someone in authority at Citibank - not a Customer Service Rep (who all have cloned responses & really don't help you). A manager or someone in a supervisory position might be able to help you protect your damaged credit (especially designed for college students who have extended themselves beyond their means). As far as a letter "DEMAND ONE" - no exceptions! Without an agreement letter you don't have proof that an agreement was made.
As far as the debt that has been turned over to a collection agency. That debt has been charged off and bought by the CA. You can negotiate a settlement, less than what they are asking - but first ask for validation of the debt. Again, if you come to a settlement amount you write the terms (see Linda's letters) and have that signed by an authorized person. DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING and send to them.
