check received during house closure

I recently purchased a house on 12/26/2001. During the closure, the lady who helping us handed us a check that said, Pay to the order of Gulf State. She gave it to us because she had no idea who Gulf State was. After three months I still don't know who Gulf State is and where I should send the check. I also talked to my mortgage broker. He gave me some ideas, but none of them helped. I someone out there can give any ideas where I am supposed to send this check, please help me. Thanks.
