GULFSTATE - DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO

After having years of great credit, suddenly Gulfstate has thrown me for a loop - Ironically, this happens right as I'm preparing to buy a house. They reported a debt of 20 dollars as a DELINQUENCY - supposedly the debt was incurred in 05/97, but it was not posted until 12/01 (last month). Even though it's only for 20 bucks, it has lowered my credit score dramatically and I'm worried I will be turned down for my home loan.

I called Gulfstate and they were quite pleasant about it, telling me that my debt was for 19.95, unpaid to Sprint. Sprint has never contacted me about any unpaid bills - I changed my address several times but always notified them and paid all of the bills I received in the mail (this was before the era of online bill paying). GS says they will put my stinking 20 dollar bill in dispute and request verification from Sprint for me, but my question is....

1. Should I still send them a formal letter, since they already took my dispute over the phone, gave me information politely, and told me what they were going to do for me?

2. Should I still send a dispute to Equifax about this entry on my credit report? Should I wait until GS gets back to me?

3. Should I contact Sprint myself? They made the switch from Sprint Spectrum to Sprint PCS during that time also, so I don't even know if they would have records going back that far.

Thanks for any advice you guys can give me. I have been reading up on all of your stories - good luck to all!
