I believe that by lying to your parents and neighbors, they have violated the FDCPA. They also are required to stop contacting you once they know you have an attorney (They may contact the attorney only.)Federal Bankruptcy law also gives an automatic stay once you have filed it (you say you are in the middle so I don't know if you have filed yet or not). This means that any creditor listed on the bankruptcy (including collection agencies that work for them) are prohibited from trying to collect the debt. If you haven't included them in the BK, do so...it's not to late. Also collection agencies can be sued for violating the FDCPA up to $1000.00 per violation. Consider it.
