If your friend works for a commercial collection company it wuldexplain it. The laws on consumer debt (that's you) are very different than for business debt.I have posted some of Texas laws below, but the main thing is to remember that you are covered by the FDCPA,(Fair Debt Collection Practices Act) something "business" debtors do not have. In Texas they can't put a lien on your home, can't garnish your wages, and if you first became delinquent (past due) on your accounts over 4 years ago, they can't sue you. TEXAS (community property State) STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS (IN YEARS) Open Acct.: 4 (credit cards) GENERAL GARNISHMENT EXEMPTIONS 100% of Wages COLLECTION AGENCY BOND & LICENSE Bond: Yes CHECK YOUR CA TO License: No IF THEY ARE BONDED Fee: No Texas has very onerous usury laws & penalties (THIS MEANS IF THEY ARE ADDING INTEREST AND XTRA CHARGES THEY CAN BE SUED) Have your friend read the FDCPA and she will be able to help much more.
