Problem is, they can do whatever they want, and unless you force them to do right, they really don't care. I think now that consumers are fighting back, they are even doing things in retaliation, trying to make you give up.

They have never been held accountable for their errors before, not on the scale that they are now. Consumer awareness is a serious threat to them.

The FTC sits back and collects complaints over a period of years, and then sometimes files suit when there is overwhelming proof that they are doing something wrong. The credit industry lobby is so strong that they influence the laws that are passed - the laws look good but have no teeth.

When you don't back down and don't give up, though, you can win. Up until now, the average person was afraid of court, and some in my parents' generation thought the CRA's were like the government - if they said you owed something, then you had to pay it. Only recently have consumers (via the internet) gained the knowledge and support to understand the law and the courts, and defend themselves.
