There are several things that need to be done,(if possible)
Get a copy of BOTH of your parent's credit reports. This will tell you who has what accounts, and if your mother is an authorized user or joint on any of your father's accounts. Any she is an authorized user on, have her removed.(a letter "from your father" requesting her removal should work) Next check his cc bills to see if he bought "credit insurance".If there are any bank accounts etc. that are in his name, even if your mother is joint, close them and reopen in her name alone.Transfer titles on any cars that are in his name to your mother. Since Indiana is not a community property State, that should take care of any real risks. E-mail me for any further questions.Biggest thing-- tell your dad not to worry,he is not leaving any burden of debt to your mother, it may help him ease the pain.
