If your credt report shows that the bank reported a charge-off date of Sept.1996, then it is IMPOSSIBLE for the bank to claim you "caught up" in Aug. They are required by law to accurately report the first date of delinquency or the charge off date to CRA's. By their OWN records as THEY reported the account had to have BECOME delinquent several months PRIOR to a charge-off date of Sept.Most likely, what they are showing as a payment from you in Aug. is their internal bookkeeping to charge-off the account, along with an additional adjustment in Jan. Your State is a "cause of action" tort State, which means that the SOL for being sued started from your first "late notice" prior to the charge-off.
