The BBB

I was going over the Better Business Bureau's web page tonight and it's a bit disturbing. On their "check out a business" page I plugged in a few names of collection agencies (i.e. Allied Interstate, NCO, Gulf States, etc). Now many (well all) of these had multiple entries... I.E. more than one location. If the entry had the BBB sign next to it (a BBB member) they were always "satisfactory" with the bureau or if not there was a lengthy, well this that and the other, we really can't tell. If they didn't have the BBB sign, often they were unsatisfactory. Does anyone know if a company must pay to be a member of the BBB? One clincher was Providian. Now we all know Providian is the lowlife of subprime lenders. Already paid out millions in 2 class action lawsuits for bilking customers, and probably going to be class action sued again this year for raising their customers interest rates to an unholy 30%. Yet the BBB gave them a satisfactory rating or a lengthy BS statement for nearly every entry and nearly every one had the BBB symbol next to it. Is the BBB legit? Have any of you ever filed a complain with the BBB and got results?
