Please help....ex - boyfriend abused my CC

Please, I desperately need some advice. In Dec of 2000, I issued a CC with my ex as an authorize user. Now, I know it was a HUGE mistake. I was trying to help him out for reservation purposes(air fare & hotel) when he travels due to court order--getting custody of his son. He promised to pay off everything when he uses the card. A month later we broke up and I told him to pay off so I can close the account. In March 2001, I found out the balance was well over $8000 and closed the account ASAP. Couple months later, he wrote me an email to apologize for causing this debt, applied for debt consolidation program, but didn't make monthly payments for 4 months now. His reason was he has other priorities. I live in CA and has been unemployed for very long time and I really don't want to pay $8700 on his shopping spree. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.
