I'm not an expert, but I don't know whether a cease and desist letter would necessarily cause you to get sued. Two different legal aid lawyers
helped me to draft cease and desist letters when
I could no longer pay my credit cards. Their reasoning was that the credit card companies who are going to sue are going to do it anyway, regardless of whether you cease their collection activity or not. The cease letter could possibly make it happen faster, I suppose, or, it could also make them understand that they aren't dealing with an idiot who is going to be intimidated. This post is not intended to be advice, it's just another view.
